Meeting The Needs Since 1797
The Dartmouth Health Legacy Brings World-Class Care Close to Home
Healthcare innovation is rooted in our country’s long history. Back when the first few generations of colonists were making their new home in the new world, the practice of medicine was rudimentary at best. In the 18th century, folk remedies were the standard of care and there was virtually no government regulation or attention paid to public health. That all changed in New England when, in 1797, Nathan Smith founded “Dartmouth Medical Department.” His bold and visionary efforts to pioneer medical education to better meet the needs of New England’s growing population, have left enduring global legacies on the practice of medicine, medical research, education, and public health.
Today, more than 200 years after Smith delivered his first lecture, Dartmouth Health continues to meet the ever-changing needs of our region. Our mission is simple in focus yet sophisticated in scope. We are advancing health through research, education, clinical practice, and community partnerships, providing each person the best care in the right place, in the right time, every time. As New Hampshire’s largest private employer and only academic health system, Dartmouth Health has evolved into an entire system of three critical access hospitals (25 beds), 2 larger community hospitals, the academic medical center, 30+ ambulatory and specialty clinic locations for out-patient care, a home care and hospice services agency, and healthcare services across New Hampshire and Vermont.
As part of our ongoing efforts to weave world-class care into the fabric of our communities Dartmouth Health maintains a commitment to excellence and innovation. This commitment is for the benefit of current and new generations of New Englanders making New Hampshire and Vermont their home. With deep ties to Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, our status as an academic medical center translates into premier research and clinical recruitment. Just like Nathan Smith, many of the best and brightest minds in medicine continue to apply their passion for innovative breakthroughs and treatments at Dartmouth Health and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.
This commitment to excellence extends well beyond research and training. At Dartmouth Health we understand that innovation means nothing unless it’s applied toward our mission of saving and improving lives.
- As a Level 1 Trauma Center, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center offers the highest level of tertiary care to critically ill and trauma patients from injury through rehabilitation, with 24-hour access to general surgeons. This designation and access to medical services reduces mortality rates across our region.
- Access to specialized services extends well beyond trauma. Dartmouth Health is the only NCI designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in Northern New England and one of only 56 in the entire nation. For patients battling cancer, this means the very highest levels of scientific excellence are being applied to their treatment.
- When it comes to our future, Dartmouth Health Children’s offers world-class pediatric healthcare for infants, children, and teens. Our fully-integrated network gives families access to leading-edge clinical expertise in 35 medical/surgical specialties–from pediatric cardiology to neurosurgery–at 12 locations across New Hampshire and Vermont.
- The Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (CHAD) is the only full-serve children’s hospital in the state.
Beyond the walls of our hospitals and facilities, we play a critical role in addressing the complex needs of our patients and our communities. By applying our expertise and resources to address health disparities and inequities, we are in a unique position to continue making a positive impact on public health. Dartmouth Health’s ongoing commitment to outreach and accessibility is evident in the integrated and collaborative system of more than 14-thousand mission-focused employees. This dynamic, locally focused network of healthcare professionals includes more than 2-thousand expert providers offering patients throughout the region highly selective choices to meet their individual healthcare needs.
Led by the best research, innovation, and medical minds in the world, we are breaking boundaries and pushing medicine to new heights–going the distance to the people in our communities don’t have to go far at all. This comprehensive world class delivery of healthcare is our purpose and, with your support, our legacy for generations to come.
We’ve been deeply woven into the fabric of communities we serve for more than 200 years. That same idea—neighbors caring neighbors—is what continues to guide us as confidently embark on next chapter in our history, well-positioned future.
